When you visit a local Mexican eatery, it's easy to be excited about not only the main course but also the food that you get to enjoy before your meal arrives. At many such establishments, it's the norm for your server to deliver a basket of warm corn chips to your table with a side of dip. There are many different types of dip that may be applicable in this situation, and some Mexican restaurants give patrons a choice of which dip they wish to try. Here are some dip options that you can enjoy with Mexican food.
1. Salsa
Salsa is one of the most popular dips that Mexican restaurants serve, and it's common for your server to drop off a large bowl of this dip alongside the corn chips. The main ingredients in salsa are tomatoes, onions, and a source of spice — often, this comes in the form of diced jalapeno peppers. Salsa can range from mild to very hot, so you can often expect that your server will ask you what type of salsa you want for your table. While salsa is typically red, you'll occasionally find restaurants that serve green salsa, which can be a pleasant visual change if you're accustomed to the red variety.
2. Guacamole
Another type of dip that you'll frequently get to enjoy with corn chips at the start of your Mexican restaurant visit is guacamole. The prime ingredient of this dip is avocado as well as onions, tomatoes, and lime juice. Some guacamole recipes are a little spicy, although this isn't typically the case. This is a creamy dip and one that is very filling, thanks to the natural fats in the avocados. If you're digging into some guacamole before your meal, you'll want to ensure that you don't eat so much that you fill up too quickly.
3. Queso
You shouldn't be surprised to find a bowl of queso available with your corn chips. Unlike the previous two dips, queso is served hot — which can be especially appealing if you're visiting the Mexican restaurant on a cold day. Queso dip is cheese-based, so this is a good choice for those who are cheese lovers. While different establishments make their queso in different ways, it's common to find ingredients such as sweet and hot peppers in this dip. Depending on the restaurant that you visit, you might even find a scenario in which your server delivers smaller portions of each of these types of dips to enjoy with your chips.
